LESSONS LEARNED Universal Nursing Practice A nurse from Transbaikalia shares some of the lessons she learned by working on a pilot project to introduce the position of a universal nurse, i.e. a healthcare worker performing the functions of a ward nurse, treatment nurse and dressing-room nurse for each of her assigned patients. Role of Nurses in Counselling Pregnant Women in Crisis Good results have been reported in Ivanovo Region from using nurse midwives for first-line counselling of women who plan to terminate pregnancy. Things to Consider Before Giving Massages to Elderly Patients Approaches to preventive and remedial interventions such as massages in elderly patients should take into account the likelihood of various co-morbidities besides the condition for which massages are indicated. Such comorbidities should be properly addressed in selecting a massage technique to use. RUSSIAN REGIONS Best Performers Praised On 8 and 9 February, the Clinical Medical Centre in Chita hosted the Regional Conference ‘Nursing Care in Polyclinics’ as part of the credit-based postgraduate training system. Premature Birth: Challenging Life Situation for Mother and Child Caring for preterm infants is an essential and challenging task which requires a high level of training. Approaches to providing such care were discussed at a conference of nurses held in Arkhangelsk in January 2017. Nursing in Oncology A conference coorganised by the Chuvash Ministry of Health and the Association of Chuvash Nurses discussed issues such as management of implanted port systems, pain relief, nurses’ role in cancer patient rehabilitation, and others. Role of Nurses in Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Approaches to providing nursing care to patients with diabetes, things to consider in administering insulin and best practices in diabetic retinopathy diagnosis and treatment were discussed at a recent conference in Cheboksary. MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS Factors Helping Improve Nurses Motivation Findings from a study, held recently in Omsk, to determine factors which can help motivate nurses and improve their performance, quality of care and job satisfaction. PREVENTION OF NOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS Role of Glove Use in Preventing Nosocomial Infection The author reviews the most important provisions of the regulations governing glove use by healthcare workers and offers guidance on glove use in various procedures based on their invasiveness and associated risk of blood-borne infection.
