the reign of King Alfred1, rather more than one thousand years
ago. <...> Its name is, however, very much older, and carries us back
in thought for yet another thousand years, to a time before the
birth of Christ or the landing of the Roman legions2 on our
shores. <...> The land which is now covered by the streets and
buildings of the largest city in the world was at that time, like
the rest of the island, a wilderness. <...> The river valley stretched between, and
the Thames wound its way through a broad tract of marshland,
dotted with pools and sand-banks, and interrupted here and
there by streamlets that sprang from these heights and flowed
into the river through the fens that bordered it. <...> When the tide was high, the Thames, unconfined by
quays and embankments, overflowed its banks, except at the
few points where they rose steeply from the stream, and formed
a huge shallow lake. <...> Just opposite that part of the lake which is now Southwark, the river-bank rose steeply to a high ground where there
existed, for many years before the coming of the Romans, a
British settlement, at first probably little more than an enclosure
for cattle surrounded by a rude fence. <...> The Briton standing by
his stockade, and looking southward, saw stretching before him
the vast lake formed, as we have seen, by the tidal waters of the
Thames, and he called his retreat Llyndin, from two British
words meaning lake and fortress. <...> Llyndin, slightly changed, has

EINLEITUNG.
Die nachfolgenden Abschnitte sollen mit der
Geschichte, Entwickelung und Bedeutung Londons, seinen hervorragendsten
Bauwerken, Sammlungen und Denkmälern, dem
Handel und Verkehr, der Verwaltung u. s. w. in grossen Zügen
bekannt machen und besonders die heutigen Zustände und Verhältnisse
der Riesenstadt eingehender schildern. Sie erzählen
von dem Leben der Bewohner während der verschiedenen
Jahrhunderte, den Heimsuchungen der Stadt, den früheren und
jetzigen Gebräuchen, dem Zunftwesen u. s. w. und entwerfen
ein anschauliches Bild von dem Treiben auf den Märkten und
in den Strassen, auf der Themse und in den Docks.
Bei der Auswahl und Anordnung des Stoffes ist vor allem
darauf Bedacht genommen worden, Einheitlichkeit in
Sprache, Stil und Darstellung durchzuführen.
Die einzelnen Stücke sind inhaltlich in sich abgeschlossen
und lassen sich vortrefflich zu mündlichen und
schriftlichen Ubungen verwerten.
Den Abbildungen liegen photographische Aufnahmen
zu Grunde. Der Lesestoff ist den besten einschlägigen Werken
entnommen, nämlich:
