The central item on the agenda was the Union’s position on raising the retirement age for the purpose of insurance pensions. According to the Union, the new law on retirement age recently passed by the State Duma significantly worsens the situation with employee rights. LESSONS LEARNED Nursing Care for Elderly Patients Moscow hosted an international conference «Elderly Patient: Quality of Life» featuring thematic symposia, breakout sessions and round tables, including a symposium «Nursing Care for the Elderly: A Contemporary Approach». Nursing Practice Standards Discussed In late September, the city of Cherepovets hosted an inter-regional conference to discuss nurse accreditation, the role of professional associations in monitoring nurse training quality, and some aspects of developing internal performance standards for a healthcare institution. Nursing Care in Critical Obstetric Conditions Caring for patients in critical conditions is one of the most challenging aspects in obstetric practice and requires detailed protocols for each medical specialist involved. The article describes how such care is managed at the Seredavin Clinical Hospital in Samara. PALLIATIVE CARE Sarcopenic Syndrome in Palliative Geriatrics Sarcopenia is age-related loss of muscle mass considered one of the risk factors for adverse life prognosis in people aged 65 and older. According to a survey of chief doctors in Russian clinics, nurses’ role is enormous. The article examines the impact of patient-centred nursing on healthcare quality. Workflow Management The quality of patient care depends on the nurse’s emotional state: a nurse focused on the work at hand acts accurately and promptly, while a nurse who is upset may act hastily, resulting in substandard patient care. Workflow management helps nurses maintain the right state of mind for productive work. VOCATIONAL TRAINING Vienna Declaration on Nursing: 30th Anniversary On October 16-17, Moscow hosted a conference to mark the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration on Nursing. The conference co-organised by the Russian Ministry of Health and the Federal Research Institute for Health Organisation and Informatics was one of the biggest events for the nursing community. Medical Training in Russia: Prospects for Evolution The annual international conference “Russian Medical Training: Innovative Teaching Methods» focused on promoting continuing medical education, improvement of specialist accreditation procedure, and using simulation technology in medicine.
