Stories of the Backwoods. <...> After the Revolutionary War, the English, in their turn,

STORIES OF THE BACKWOODS
WHILE England was busy exploring and settling the
eastern coast of North America, the French were busy
exploring and building trading posts through the rich country of
the northwest. Their brave traders made their way through the
dark forests of whispering pines, or their canoes went dancing
down the rippling waters of some stream, to the lodges of the
Indians. There they traded firearms and beads and other gay
trinkets to the savage, in exchange for valuable furs.
England at last began to see that she must make some
effort to drive the French out of the Ohio Valley and save this
rich trading ground. A war broke out, and at its close the
beautiful country of New France, as it was called, passed into
the hands of the English.
