Summary
This issue of the journal is fully devoted
to Mikhail Ugarov. The playwright, theater
director, co-founder and artistic director
of the Moscow Teatr.doc, the ideologist
of the «new drama» movement has recently
departed from us. He was a man whose
artistic activity over the past 20 years
has influenced not only the development
of theatrical art in Russia, but also
changed the role of the theater as
a social institution that contributes
to the formation of civil society
in our country.
The issue consists of several sections,
which correspond to certain aspects
of the life and work of Mikhail Ugarov.
It opens with an article by the editorin-chief
Marina Davydova, in which she
compares the system of Mikhail Ugarov
with the famous Stanislavsky system.
There's also a large interview with
him that he gave Alla Shenderova in 2007
for the collective edition of works
of the Institute of Art Studies. However
the interview was eventually excluded
from the edition under the pretext
of «a small significance of the hero».
Next comes the corpus of texts under
the general title «Playwrights about
the playwright.» It includes memories
of colleagues and students of Mikhail
Ugarov, and most importantly, reflections
on his creative method and the search
for a new language, new characters and
a new theatrical aesthetics in general.
The section contains the texts of
the leading playwrights that were part of
the Teatr.doc circle: Dmitry Bogoslavsky,
Natalia Vorozhbit, Alexander Vartanov,
Mikhail Durnenkov, Vyacheslav Durnenkov,
Herman Grekov, Yevgeny Kazatchkov,
Yuri Muravitsky, Ekaterina Narshi,
Valery Pecheykin and Lyubov Stryzhak.
The section «Provincial Stage. Beginning»
gives an idea of the first steps of the
future reformer of the Russian theater,
and then only a young provincial from
Arkhangelsk, who obtained an actor's job
in Kirov's Youth Theater in 1978. At that
time the head of the theater was Vladimir
Urin, now the head of the Bolshoi Theater,
and Alexander Borodin, who later headed
the RAMT in Moscow, was its director.

Summary
In Anna Banasyukevich's big article you
can read how Mikhail Ugarov's plays were
incarnated on the stage. The dramaturgy
of Mikhail Ugarov through the eyes of the
directors is represented in a series
of conversations with the directors
of his plays — Alexander Galibin, Vladimir
Mirzoyev, Vladimir Mikhelson and Semyon
Aleksandrovsky. The theme is taken up
by the actor Vladimir Skvortsov, which
was starring in the legendary performance
of Mikhail Ugarov «The Oblom off».
The critic Nika Parkhomovskaya
recalls Alexander Galibin's performance
«Urban Romance» based on Ugarov's play
«The Ragamuffin», which became a notable
event in St. Petersburg in the mid-1990s.
Marina Razbezhkina, the head of the
Documentary Film School, where Mikhail
Ugarov taught with her, wrote the preface
to the «Pedagogics» section. Former
students of the DFS specially prepared
for the publication in THEATER.
the notes of Mikhail Ugarov's lectures
and the curricula formulated by him.
Students of the Russian State University
for the Humanities shared with the journal
«The fabulous joys of life», they got
from Mikhail Ugarov, and the director
Zarema Zaudinova shared her experience
of studying in his «Anti-School».
The well-known human rights activist
Zoya Svetova argues about the political
theater and the role of Teatr.doc
in the development of civil society
in the article «What is «the appeal
to the norm» according to Mikhail Ugarov».
In this section there is also the text
«Russian Teatr.doc and Hungarian
«Kretakor»: the basement is important»
by the theater scholar Natalia Yakubova,
who compares the experience of the protest
theater in Russia and in Hungary.
In the section of «Theatrical Theory»,
the culture studies scholar Ilmira
Bolotyan presents the first draft
of the «Anti — Dictionary» by Ugarov,
which contains the terms and expressions
that were important for his theater
practice. They came into use thanks
to him and really changed spectators’
and actors' optics, because they were
tested in numerous seminars, readings
and productions. Anastasia Lobanova
in the article «How to work with
the documentary text» talks about
the verbatim and the play-writing
technologies laid down by the founders
of the Teatr.doc Elena Gremina and Mikhail
Ugarov. Christina Matvienko in the article
«The Society of the Performance»
according to Mikhail Ugarov» analyzes
the laboratory activities realized within
the framework of the festival «New drama»
and in Teatr.doc. In her opinion, they
became a natural response to the inability
to do something new in stationary theaters
for public money.
When the issue was made up in pages, Elena
Gremina, a playwright, co-founder and head
of Teatr.doc also died. She followed her
husband Mikhail Ugarov on May 16, fortyfive
days after his death. The text
of Elena Kovalskaya «You must write» —
is placed instead of the afterword.
