IntRoDUCtIon
This book is intended for undergraduate students of Natural
Sciences and Geography.
The main aim of the book is to enlarge professional-oriented vocabulary
and the formation of lexical skills and abilities of students.
The book is made up of three main modules and a Glossary. Each
module consists of several units. At the end of each unit there are revision
exercises and at the end of each module there is a review lesson.
The most difficult exercises are provided with keys.
The process of learning vocabulary is organized in several stages.
The first stage includes an introduction and actualization of the previous
lexical knowledge. The second stage involves working with graphic,
sound and semantic forms of new lexical units. At the third stage these
lexical units are memorized and imprinted in memory. At the fourth
stage new lexical units are activated and included into speech activity.
The fifth stage generates the following lexical abilities: to select professionally
significant lexical unit; word formation; to guess the meaning
of words according to the context; to paraphrase and to translate.
All materials presented in the book are authentic, borrowed from
popular scientific literature, periodicals, and Internet sources. In some
cases, the texts were subject to minor cuts without changing the language
material.
The content of the book corresponds to the modern level of technology
development. It combines printed, audio and video materials. This
book can be also used as an additional material for bachelors of other
branches of science.
